Dec 12 2020

Homes are mostly constructed using artificial lighting not keeping the natural light in mind. One of the most important factors while constructing or renovating a home is natural light. According to research, our genes respond to natural light positively. Most buildings still provide an unhealthy indoor climate with too little natural light.

Natural light improves our mood and produces endorphins also known as the feel-good hormones in our body.

  • Having your home set to receive as much sunlight as possible can help you get some of your daily vitamin D without even having to think about it much.
  • Natural light gives us more energy to start our day.
  • Natural light reduces eye strain compared to other lighting methods.

5 Health Benefits Of Natural Light At Home

Natural light has several health benefits:

Natural Light Reduces Blood Pressure

Research shows that sunlight alters the level of the small messenger, nitric oxide in the skin and blood, which reduces blood pressure.

When you are exposed to a natural light small amount of NO (nitric oxide) is transferred from the skin to the circulation, lowering blood vessel tone, as blood pressure drops, so does the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Natural Light can Boost the Immune System

Without sufficient sources of the vitamin in the blood, the cells remain dormant and therefore are incapable of fighting foreign pathogens. T cells are a type of white blood cell that performs a central role in the immune system. Our immune system relies on T-cells to fight foreign pathogens and sunlight wakes them up.

Natural Light Benefits of Vision

You should not directly stare at the sun but the light it creates is good for the eyes.

Natural light Improves Sleep

The study has shown that exposure to natural light will give you better sleep.

A home with natural light is of prime importance for your well-being.

Especially during this time of the pandemic, most of us are spending 90% of our day indoors.

Natural Light for Weight-loss

Scientists have discovered that getting a good dose of sunshine improves health by lowering fat.

Mental Health Benefits Of Natural Light

Natural light reduces stress and anxiety

Every morning if you are exposed to natural light you feel calm and become better at coping with anxiety-provoking experiences.

Brenda Mc Mahon, MD, of the Neurobiology Research Unit at the Copenhagen University, Denmark said natural light improves communication between the regions of the brain that are central to our handling of emotions such as stress and anxiety.

Natural Light Increases Happiness

Sunlight causes our brains to produce serotonin, a hormone that can improve mood by alleviating pain, providing energy, and making us feel happy and well-rested. Sunlight also produces endorphins, also known as the “feel-good hormone.”

Natural Light Helps Prevent SAD

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs when the seasons change, usually in the fall and winter. Letting sunlight in during the darker months is especially important since the days are so much shorter.

Natural light is a key nutrient and a great source of Vitamin D for the human body. The above-mentioned tips are very important for the overall well-being of the human body.

Simple Ways to Get More Natural Light in Your Home

The amount of natural light that makes its way into your home depends on a number of different factors. Some changeable, some not so.

The biggest factor is the direction in which your home is orientated, which isn’t very easily changeable. But there are some simpler tips and techniques you can implement to get more natural light into your home, which we’ll come into shortly.

The Way Your House Faces

Many people like a south-facing garden to make the most of the sun during the evening. However, a south-facing garden probably means a north-facing house, which wouldn’t be exposed to much sunlight during the day. If you spend a lot of time at home during the day, this wouldn’t be ideal.

In the UK, a south-facing home general gets the most amount of natural light during the day. This is because the sun rises in the East and tracks across the southern half of the sky before setting in the West.

East-facing homes get lots of morning sun in through the front, but not so much in the evening. If you have a west-facing garden or a room at the back of your house facing west, you’ll get plenty of evening sun too.

A west-facing house will have the sunrise at the back of the house and the sun flooding through the front during the evening. An east-facing garden will get the sun in the morning and early afternoon but it tends to disappear during the evening time.

Change Round Internal Room Use

The way your traditional bricks and mortar house cannot be changed, although you can change room used to make the most of the natural light you get.

On a bigger scale, you can also renovate the house to the type of orientation you desire. If you like the sun in your living room during the evening, make sure it faces the West. If you really want to have the sun in your kitchen during the day, you’ll want it south-facing.

Add Windows and Skylights

Adding windows in walls that get sun through the day, particularly south-facing walls, will have a huge impact. The more windows you have the more natural light will get in. Skylights are fantastic for this and will make a big difference whichever way your house faces.

Add Glass Doors or Sliding Doors at the Back

The more glass you have throughout your home and on the outside, the less light will be blocked. Bi-folding doors are currently a very popular way to connect the inside of a home to the outside. They also let in a huge amount of natural light. Sliding doors and patio doors have the same effect.

A little tip is to make sure any doors have minimum trim and solid material and maximum glass. This will cost more but the difference is noticeable.
